As part of our collaboration with the government through the Lilongwe City Council, Tingathe, along with Senior Chief Njewa and members from his area, will conduct a tree planting exercise on February 16th, 2024, at Senior Chief Njewa’s Area. This activity is part of the “Greening the Lilongwe City Campaign” which was launched by the Lilongwe City Council on January 26, 2024.
At Tingathe, we firmly believe that this exercise holds importance for community and country development because it enhances environmental sustainability by addressing climate change, mitigating soil erosion, improving air quality, and creating habitats for wildlife. Apart from that, it fosters community engagement, instils a sense of environmental stewardship, and contributes to the long-term ecological balance and resilience of our surroundings.
Moreover, our collaboration with the government in this endeavor supports our advocacy for environmental conservation through the Tingathe Geni program. Through this program, we provide training and promote the sale of eco-friendly charcoal briquettes made from materials such as rice and groundnuts husks. By doing so, we aim to reduce the unnecessary cutting down of trees for wood charcoal production. By reducing reliance on wood charcoal, we mitigate deforestation, thus tackling the adverse effects of climate change such as droughts and floods, which have devastating impacts on lives and the economy.
Have you planted a tree this year? If not, we invite you to join us as we work towards greener communities and a healthier planet.
